About Me
It is inspirational to see clients go from assessment to intervention and often to a stage where they live a more meaningful quality. This experience, combined with my interest in understanding the human mind and its functions which I developed during my college years, is why I am passionate about supporting people in managing their mental health.
From my work experience, I have learnt the value of consistently placing a client's involvement at the forefront of practice and the value of using clients' social graces and systemic factors in their formulation and incorporating this into their care. My experience has also taught me how mental health affects all aspects of an individual's life, i.e. families, relationships, finances and physical health and how mental health is on a continuum. These values and experiences and my ability to communicate compassionately and respectfully with clients and provides me with ability to work as a holistic, reflective, compassionate practitioner.
In my free time, I enjoy cooking new recipes from different cultures, weightlifting/strength training and trying new restaurants to eat at. I also like watching Netflix series such as Queer Eye, Reality TV shows and all food competitions on my suggested list.
My Skills
Communication
I communicate with clients, their systems and external services to conduct assessments to formulate clients' current concerns and assist in diagnosis decision-making and intervention plans. I work in multidisciplinary teams, where I have considered how personal and professional values can affect practice and be harnessed to foster successful teamwork. From this, I have developed my ability to communicate highly technical and clinically sensitive information effectively to clients, their families, and other professionals.
Reflective Skills
Supervision has enhanced my reflectivity; focusing on personal attributes like mental health experiences (MHE) harnesses my ability to empathise with clients but exposed biases, like concentrating on the client and I MHE similarities which led me to make assumptions and miss aspects of client's MHE vital in supporting them And miss aspects of client's MHE vital in supporting them. I now continuously manage these biases in supervision, focusing on helping clients' needs and emotions in session.
Collaboration
I've learnt to involve clients' voices in audits by collecting their service & treatment feedback. I've also involved clients and their networks in the therapeutic process by collaboratively developing formulations and intervention plans with their input. From this, I've learnt the value of person-centred practice, i.e. improved therapeutic alliance with clients and identifying future service growth opportunities. This experience has been central to developing my value of collaboration, and I will always place involve clients and their networks in clinical work and service development.
Compassionate
Reflection on my personal experience has taught me how mental health affects all aspects of an individual's life. I also have a dyslexia diagnosis, and I use dyslexia software, report templates, and supervision to manage my workload on tasks requiring extended reading and writing periods. These experiences have taught me the difficulties of assimilating a diagnosis and mental health into life and which has been central in guiding my ability to be compassionate and empathise with clients.
My Research Skills
From contributing to research projects, service evaluations, quality improvement, I have developed my ability to think critically about research and to make theory-practice links. Prioritising service-user involvement benefitted these projects in many ways, For example, undertaking research in collaboration with, rather than on behalf of, service users, improving the external validity. I believe that clinical training will put me in a unique position to be an effective leader in the ever changing demands of the NHS.
Applying Psychological Knowledge
Throughout my work experience, I have had training in various psychological theories, models and interventions such as CBT, DBT and narrative therapy. In combination with the NICE guidelines approach, I have directly applied the evidence-based literature in my practice whilst providing psychological assessment and psychological interventions to support children, young people and adults from various clinical populations. This experience is central to developing my ability to apply psychological knowledge to clinical populations.
